My husband has taken to heart cooking with cast iron skillets, pots and pans after my doctor suggested that we should be using those in an attempt to get my iron levels a bit higher. I have a somewhat rare type of anemia that is completely intolerant to iron; My body is essentially allergic to iron and will not process it at all but as we all know, we all need it. So, for the last few months my husband has taken the task of following the doctors recommendations, and only uses cast iron pans and skillets.
This set comes with four cast iron skillets: 10”, 7.9”, 6.1” and a 5.1”. The three bigger skillets have spouts on both sides which is perfect for pouring out liquids. The last one, is a smaller skillet that is not that shallow; We use it mostly for frying individual eggs. The skillets come already seasoned but do have instructions on how to re or pre season the skillets again which is done by baking the skillets covered with a thin layer of oil on the cooking surfaces. The seasoning needs to be re done after every wash, and after every wash the skillets need to be completely dry as rust will set in really quick if not dry. If rust shows up, no problem, cast iron can be sanded down back to almost new. We learned about that with our first cast iron pan but were able to fix it after some sanding which makes these skillets and anything made out of cast iron an indestructible surface. The set also comes with two silicone handle guards which are extremely handy, our other sets did not come with those and we are constantly using the silicone handles for those as well. These handles can be washed in the dishwasher but we do it by hand as we are always using them around the kitchen.
What my husband loves about these cast iron skillets is the liberty of being able to place them in the oven to finish cooking or to simply cook. He has become a master at combining the stove and the oven into his cooking style. These skillets are not dishwasher friendly at all due to its material and the rusting, so it needs to be washed by hand (and re seasoned after each wash). Cooking with these skillets makes him feel all professional.
Overall, this set of cast iron skillets are a great addition to any kitchen. The skillets are well done, and work as expected out of a good quality cast iron pan. We think it might be due to my iron deficiency but I believe it gives an extra taste to the food, a good one. Since we have been using cast iron my levels have maintained at the same level as when we began which in my case it is a good thing as when the doctor suggested cooking with it was because my levels kept dropping. There is nothing we would change about this set, and would definitely recommend it to others considering it.
